How to Create a Digital Menu Destination with TacTile

A TacTile Menu destination turns a tap or scan into a live menu: build one manually in the app, connect it to Toast or Square so pricing updates automatically, or link out to a menu you already host (like a PDF or website). Choose your category as Menus, pick a path, and publish in minutes.

What is a menu destination?

A Menu destination is a tap-or-scan-accessible digital menu that either lives natively in the TacTile app, mirrors your live POS catalog, or points to a menu you host elsewhere. In one sentence: it's the difference between printing a new menu every time a price changes and having one that updates itself.

75% of restaurants worldwide now use QR codes for digital menus, scan volume has surged 433% over two years, and restaurants using QR code menus report roughly $3,600 in average annual savings versus reprinting physical menus.

How to create a menu destination

Build

Create your menu inside TacTile.

  1. Open the TacTile app and tap Create.
  2. On the category picker, select Menus — "Food, drinks, or services."
  3. On the type picker, choose Build a menu.
  4. Add sections (e.g., Starters, Entrées, Drinks) using the "Add section" button.
  5. Within each section, add items with name, price, description, dietary tags, and an optional photo.
  6. Reorder sections and items by drag-and-drop to match your physical menu layout.
  7. Preview the menu exactly as a guest will see it after a tap or scan.
  8. Tap Save & Publish, then assign it to a table tent NFC tag or a printed QR code.
Connect

Sync from Toast or Square so pricing updates automatically.Recommended

  1. From the Menus type picker, choose the Connectors section and select Toast or Square.
  2. Tap Connect account and complete the OAuth login on Toast's or Square's own screen.
  3. TacTile pulls your existing item catalog, categories, prices, and (for Square) photos automatically.
  4. Review the imported menu inside TacTile and hide any items you don't want guest-facing (e.g., internal modifiers).
  5. Tap Save. From this point forward, price and 86'd-item changes made in Toast/Square sync to your tap-to-view menu automatically.
  6. Assign the synced menu to your table NFC tags or entrance QR code.

Which path should I use?

Connect is the recommended path for any restaurant already running Toast or Square — it's the only option that keeps your tap-to-view menu in sync with your real-time pricing and 86'd items without manual double entry. Build is the right call if you don't use a POS system, or you run a smaller service business (a barbershop price list, a spa menu of services) where updates are infrequent. Link is best as a fast stopgap if you already have a polished PDF or web menu and don't want to rebuild it yet.

Common use cases

Full-service restaurants

Table tents with NFC tags open a synced Toast menu so daily specials and sold-out items reflect in real time.

Coffee shops and cafés

A counter QR code opens a Build menu with seasonal drink sections swapped in minutes, no reprint.

Food trucks

A single NFC sticker on the truck's window connects to Square so the menu updates the moment pricing changes.

Bars

A laminated card at each table links to a cocktail and beer menu, updated the moment a keg blows or a seasonal cocktail rotates in.

Service businesses

Hair salons, barbershops, spas, and tattoo studios use a Build menu as a digital price list at the front desk instead of a laminated sheet.

Menu + analytics

TacTile reports Total Views for every menu destination — how many times a guest tapped or scanned to open it. For Connect-path menus, cross-reference view spikes against POS order timestamps to see how directly menu views precede orders, and watch which sections get the most repeat views as a signal for what to feature or price-test next.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Connect path replace my POS system?
No — Toast or Square remains your system of record for orders and payments; TacTile only mirrors your published menu data for the tap-to-view experience.
How often does a Connect menu update after I change a price in Toast or Square?
Sync timing depends on the connector's refresh behavior; check current sync frequency in the app settings.
Can I run a Build menu and a Connect menu at the same time?
Yes — for example, a seasonal or event menu can be Build-based while your core menu stays Connect-synced to Square.
Will guests know they're viewing a live-synced menu versus a static one?
No visible difference — both render the same way to the guest; only your editing workflow changes.
Can I add photos to menu items?
Yes on the Build path (manual upload) and on Square-connected menus where product photos already exist in your catalog.
What if I switch POS providers later?
You can disconnect the old connector and reconnect a new one (e.g., moving from Square to Toast); you'll need to re-map or re-import your catalog.
Is a digital menu accessible for guests without a smartphone?
QR/NFC menus assume a smartphone camera or NFC-enabled phone; keep a small number of printed menus on hand for guests without one.
Can I include allergen or dietary tags?
Yes — the Build path supports item-level tags (vegetarian, gluten-free, etc.); Connect-path tags depend on whether your POS catalog stores them.
