What is a wifi destination?

A Wi-Fi destination is a tap or scan that hands a visitor's phone your network credentials directly, triggering the device's native "Join Wi-Fi network?" prompt instead of making them find and type a password. It replaces typing a password on someone else's keyboard with a single tap or scan that connects the device automatically.

How to create a wifi destination

Build

Enter your network credentials — the only path, since they live on your router, not an app.Recommended

  1. Open the TacTile app and tap Create → select the Wi-Fi category from the destination picker.
  2. Choose Wi-Fi Network from the type picker to confirm you're encoding network credentials, not a note or link.
  3. Enter your Network Name (SSID) exactly as it appears on your router — this is case-sensitive.
  4. Enter your Wi-Fi password. TacTile will encode this directly; it is not stored as freely readable text within the app interface after saving.
  5. Select your security type — typically WPA/WPA2-Personal, WPA3-Personal, or None for open networks.
  6. Tap Save, then Assign to Tag or Generate QR.
  7. Test before deploying: tap the tag or scan the QR yourself and confirm your phone prompts to join the correct network.
  8. Place the tag or printed QR somewhere visible and reachable — a table tent, a laminated card at reception, or a sticker near the router.

Which path should I use?

Connect exists for destinations that authorize into an external account or service, and Link exists for destinations that point at a URL that already exists somewhere. Wi-Fi credentials satisfy neither condition — your SSID, password, and security type live on your router, not on a platform TacTile could authenticate into, and there's no public URL representing "join this network." Build is the only mechanism that makes sense: you type the three values TacTile needs, and it encodes them directly into the tag or QR using the standard Wi-Fi network config format that iOS and Android already recognize natively. There's nothing to connect to and nothing to link from — just credentials to enter once.

Does this work on both iPhone and Android?
Yes. Both platforms natively recognize encoded Wi-Fi network tags and QR codes and surface a "Join network?" prompt without a separate app — this has been standard behavior across recent iOS and Android versions.
What happens if I change my Wi-Fi password?
The tag or QR code will stop working for new connections and needs to be re-encoded in the TacTile app with the updated password.
Is my password secure, or can anyone see it if they scan the code?
The credential is embedded in the tag or QR's data payload, not displayed as plain text — someone would need to deliberately decode the tag with the right tools to extract the password, not simply glance at it. That said, be honest with yourself about the tradeoff: anyone who can physically tap or scan your tag can join your network, and a sufficiently motivated person could decode it later, so this is best treated as convenient-not-classified security, similar to posting a password on a wall.
Does this work for enterprise networks (WPA2-Enterprise/802.1X)?
Typically no, or only in limited form — most Wi-Fi tag/QR standards are built around personal network authentication (a single shared password), not the per-user certificate or login flow enterprise networks use. If your network requires individual employee logins, check with TacTile support before relying on this for enterprise deployment.
Can I have more than one Wi-Fi destination for different networks?
Yes — for example, a separate destination for a guest network versus a staff network, each pointing at different credentials.
What if someone's phone is too old to support this?
Older devices without native Wi-Fi tag/QR support may need to join manually; it's worth keeping the plain-text SSID and password visible somewhere as a fallback.
Do I need to reprint the tag if I only change the password but keep the same network name?
The physical tag itself doesn't need replacing, but the encoded data must be updated in the app to match — otherwise it will attempt to join with the old, now-incorrect password.
